Do It Yourself SEO: How to Get Started
Keywords are the terms that you expect targeted prospects will use in search engines to find your company.
Choose Keywords Associated with Your Company's Focus
When selecting keyword, start by selecting keywords that best describe your company's focus. For example, if your company sells athletic shoes, keywords like "athletic shoes" or "tennis shoes". Be sure to account for plural versus singular versions of keywords, such as "shoe" vs. "shoes" as Google currently treats plural and singular versions of keywords as two different words.
Avoid Broad Keywords
Don't choose terms that could be considered too broad in scope. For example, the keyword "shoes" would be too broad for an athletic shoe company. A searcher who enters the keyword "shoes" in a search engine query may be looking for a variety of shoe types, such as "horse shoes" or "nursing shoes" -- items which an athletic shoe company is not likely to carry.
Choose Keywords by Popularity
There are several useful tools available for selecting the right keywords, such as the Keyword Selector Tool from Yahoo! (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/), which allows you to enter a keyword and see how many searches were performed the previous month on Yahoo!'s properties for that keyword and related keywords. A search for the keyword "shoes" using this tool may yield the following results:
Searches | Keywords |
715362 | shoes |
288926 | |
234565 | |
131741 | |
97197 | |
95219 | |
70525 | |
62668 | |
58193 | |
48386 |
From these results, an athletic shoe company might also select additional keywords that describe its products, such as "new balance shoes", "jordan shoes", "nike shoes" and "puma shoes".
Assign One Page on Your Website to One or Two Keywords
Once you've selected your keyword list, select one page per keyword on your website. For instance, on the website of an athletic shoe company that sells Nike " brand shoes, the keyword "nike shoes" might be most appropriate on the website page that details the Nike shoes the company carries.
Proliferate the Keyword Throughout The Website Page
Search engines use website page content to determine a page's theme. In the example above, a page with the keyword "nike shoes" repeated often on the page would signal to the search engine that the website page is about "nike shoes". Therefore, repeat a keyword throughout its appropriate website page as often as possible without sounding repetitive. Aim for high "keyword density," the percentage of times a keyword phrase appears throughout all of your content on that page.
There are several free, online tools to help you determine your keyword density on a webpage. GoRank offers a free keyword density analyzer tool (http://www.gorank.com/seotools/). A generally desirable keyword density is 4-7%.
Sometimes, website owners go overboard when repeating a keyword on a page. Remember that your website page must also be comprehensible to your website's visitors. So don't repeat a keyword just in an attempt to have maximum keyword density. Carefully balance marketing message with keyword density when editing your website pages.
What To Do When an Appropriate Page Doesn't Exist
When you don't have a website page that seems appropriate for proliferating a keyword, ask yourself is, "Is this keyword appropriate?". If you don't already have a page on your website focused on that keyword, it may not be an appropriate keyword for your company.
There may situations where you have too many keywords that do in fact relate to your company's focus that do not currently have website pages. In that case, examine your website site map and organization and determine if there are appropriate ways to extend your website's content without being redundant.
Link Building
The quantity of third-party links, or links from other websites that point to yours, are the best way to be listed higher in search engines. Although, it is not just the sheer number of links that determines your search engine ranking but also the words within the linking text, also known as the "anchor text".
Create a Link Building Strategy
With the anchor text rule in mind, build a company link building strategy. Ideally, your link building strategy should include ways to naturally build links through viral marketing or partnership methods. In our example of the athletic shoe company, perhaps links from manufacturer sites would be helpful, or perhaps implementing a self-created affiliate program will help. Whatever your approach, be sure to define the words within the anchor text of the links.
Track Your Progress
Search engine rankings are never permanent -- search engines are always updating their algorithms that index and rank websites. So it's important to track your progress on a regular, ongoing basis, to alert you if changes need to be made.
WebPosition (www.webposition.com) tracks and reports on search engine rankings based on keyword and search engine. WebPosition's scheduler function allows you to run reports automatically on a set schedule, so that you can keep track of your rankings and those of your competitors on an interval basis.

Tips For Search Engine Optimizations
Not only do you have just a few seconds to grab the attention of the web visitor, content developers must perform well within search engine searches so they are "found"when web surfers search on related keywords or phrases. In order to perform well, a website must have traffic. Decent traffic will result if a website ranks well in search engines, that is why strong placement in search engines for critical keywords and phrases is essential.
When struggling with search engine optimization just go back to the basics. What do search engines want? Search engines want to return search results, that are relevant and useful to the searcher. Webmasters can help search engines discern what keywords or phrases their site relates to.
Search Engine Optimization Dos
1. CSS - Cascading Style Sheets.
Use header tags and cascading style sheets in your website design. Many search engines value H1 and H2 tags more than others. The assumption is that header tags are used to highlight the most important items or themes that appear on a page. By using header tags, webmasters can bullet those keywords or phrases they deem to be most important. The CSS file will help your site load quickly and provide a consistent look and feel throughout the website.
2. Titles.
A website is the collection of webpages under a single domain. A webpage refers to a specific page within a website. Unique page titles throughout a website is important. Websites typically contain many webpages and using unique titles on webpages will help highlight different key phrases while uniting all the website content in a single theme.
3. Related Links.
Links from related or relevant sites are more important than generic links from unrelated websites. Links are seen as "votes" of quality content. Search engines weigh links from websites that contain related or similar content more importantly, than links from unrelated websites. Work to obtain relevant quality links from related or authority websites.
4. Anchor Text.
Vary anchor text. Use a variety of phrases to link to a site. Using different anchor text to link to a website is seen by search engines as "natural" linking. Search engines use the anchor text of a websites incoming link as part of their algorithm to determine a websites theme.
5. Copy.
A minimum of 200 words of copy is suggested for each web page. In order to spider a site a search engine must have sufficient copy to spider. Less does not necessarily mean more, when it comes to search engine ranking. In general try to keep copy "above the fold", so that visitors don't have to scroll. Copy above the fold is usually sufficient to determine the context of the webpage.
6. Fresh.
Keep it fresh. Search engines take notice of how frequently content is updated or added. Search engines spider websites that update content on a frequent basis at regular intervals. Add new content or webpages daily or weekly to increase a search engine spider's frequency.
7. Consistent.
Provide quality, consistent, fresh content. Consistent related content is critical to encouraging both visitors and search engines to return. Providing consistent quality content encourages links which will increase a websites popularity.
8. Themed.
Relate the contents of a website by a single theme. Uniting content using contextual words will help websites rank well for less critical but very targeted related keywords and phrases.
Search Engine Optimization Don'ts
1. Keyword Stuffing.
Don't stuff web pages with keywords that is similar to or the same as the webpages background color. Most search engines have ways to detect keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing will likely result in a search engine ban.
2. Cloaking.
Cloaking is when the website identifies the IP address of a search engine spider and feeds the spider content that it is not really on the page. Essentially the search engine sees optimized content that is not currently on the web page that it is spidered. It is difficult for search engines to detect cloaking, but if a site is banned or cloaking it is very difficult to convince a search engine to relist the content.
3. Don't Sacrifice Quality
Don't sacrifice quality for optimization. While search engine optimization is important, it is equally important that the content on a webpage should make sense. Placing well in search engines at the expense of a quality professional image with decent web copy, will not usually result in sales. It is a matter of striking a balance.
4. Spam.
Not much to be said about this one, don't spam. Don't spam search engines, don't conduct email spam campaigns, and don't spam forums. Being labeled a spammer is a hard reputation to shed.
A website is an important part of a business, search engine optimization is a business investment and requires attention and effort in order to succeed. Website creation is more than just pretty images and an attractive design. In order to "sell" your product or service your information, your site must be found. Therefore it is imperative that search engine content is optimized for search engine placement.

Blog Tips for SEO
Blog Tips for SEO
by S. Housley
Blogs are the current rage, and many webmasters have blogs but fail to use their blog to it's full potential. Blogs provide a steady stream of fresh content, and if this content is written and managed properly, blogs have the ability to increase a website's ranking in the search engines.
1. Host Your Own Blog
In order to prosper from a blog, be sure to host it on your own domain. Hosting the blog on your own server will maximize the links to your website. Link popularity is one of the factors search engines use to rank websites. Resist the urge to use free hosting services, do not give away your link popularity!
2. RSS Feeds
All blogs should have an RSS feed. An RSS feed will allow for your blog posts to be easily syndicated. The syndication will result in links back to your blog from RSS directories or others who display the feed. Blog entries should be available via an RSS feed. Website visitors who subscribe to the feed will receive notification when new blog posts are added. If the title is of interest, they will click through to your website. This gives subscribers an easy way to know when a blog has been updated.
3. Use White Space
Be sure to make your content scannable. Few website visitors actually read blog posts; most web visitors simply scan a blog entry to determine its relevance or point. With that in mind, the blog posts should be displayed in short paragraphs. Overly long posts should be segmented into concise paragraphs or broken into bulleted lists to make scanning easier. Avoid the urge to "clutter" the post.
4. Titles Matter
You only have seconds to grab the attention of scanners browsing your blog. Use keywords and catchy titles to draw readers in. Blog post titles can be bolded for emphasis and white space should be used to buffer the content.
5. Grammar Matters
You will be judged by your knowledge and use of the English language. Search engines will make note of blog entries that lack proper punctuation or capitalization. If a blog post does not respect the rules of grammar and punctuation, it is possible search engines will make the assumption that a bot cobbled together the posts leading to a potential ban.
6. Legibility
As with any web design select fonts carefully, do not use micro or macro-fonts. Colors should be web safe, making it easy to discern and read. The background and background color should not obscure the text.
7. Navigate
Give readers somewhere to go, include links to additional information resources or extended information in the blog post. Including links in the actual blog post will ensure back links should the RSS feed be syndicated.
8. Communicate
If you create a post about someone, let them know, they might surprise you and link back or they might blog about your blog post, essentially creating a virtual dialogue. This is an easy way to build link popularity. Be warned however, simply mentioning a popular blogger on a blog will rarely result in a link back, the content of the blog post must "grab" their interest.
9. Incorporate SEO
Blog posts should be written as you would write a web copy. Posts should be natural and make sense while still incorporating keywords and keyword phrases that relate to the content.
10. Speed Matters
Web pages that are slow to load will frustrate users, be sure to use reliable web hosting. Compress graphics to maximize load time.
Use your blog to help your website attract traffic. Attention to Search Engine Optimization details could mean the difference between popular and unpopular.
